Keaton's Bel Air Program

This is just a quick peek at Keaton in action during his special pre-k class program. He had a great time and was clearly happy to be up there, but you'll notice some of his little quirks (a lot of putting his hands in his mouth/scratching his skin). Whenever he has to really concentrate we notice these habits, but they do seem to be decreasing. In any case, the kid is stinking adorable!

The Randomness That Was May (well, up until today at least).

Well, at this point I am so freaking far behind that I don't even care what order I post things in. Branik turned 3 over a month ago and I do intend to blog that out at some point, but the pictures aren't handy so this is what you get instead.

Behold May 2009 for the Terry family:

Boone finally talked me into coming camping with the family, but that meant we had to buy a real family sized tent and not our little backpacking one he crammed the kids into last time.
It seems like a pretty sweet little setup, which I can say based on the fact that it fit air mattresses for each family member with room to spare. I can do "real camping" or I can do "we have 3 kids here" camping, but not both at the same time.

Anyway, I am less grumpy about getting attacked by mosquitoes and peeing in bushes when I have friends around to distract me, so we managed to convince the Galan family to come with us. Aren't they so cute? Yes, yes they are.

They also coincidentally have the same tent we do, which makes them even more awesome-er than we thought.

We figure we spent about 72 hours preparing for, and recovering from our one night trip, which was really all to get 3 hours of uninterrupted adult conversation around the campfire, but it was still worth it (it was, right guys?) Plus, the kids like it, so we get to feel like good parents for a few hours which is always bizarre/nice.

The kids had "kids scary story circle time"...

...played for hours in the lake, and by the lake, I mostly mean the mud BY the lake...

...and ate s'mores until we were sick of them and threw them in the tents:)

After that we ate more, talked more, peed in bushes more, ate more again, and finally gave in to our delirium at about 2:00 in the morning. Which meant we got a whopping 4 hours of sleep before the kids woke up, at which point it was pancake time!

I have a picture of each of our kids eating their first "camping pancakes", and this is Branik's:

Look at that face -- isn't it so full of joy?

Now look at that belly -- isn't it so full of pancakes? Yes it is. Branik has inherited my ability to eat until I literally have to disrobe out of sheer discomfort. Sometimes I skip the swim diaper though.

Truth in blogging -- this is how I look on 4 hours of sleep. Don't wake me early. You've been warned. Anyway, it was fun and we are excited to go again, but have decided the trip needs to be 2 or 3 nights at least to make all the planning worth it. You know you can't wait to see how I look after 3 days. You know it. I don't blame you, I can hardly wait myself.

Moving on.

Branik would like me to type "big brothers suck", and since he's the baby he gets what he wants. Why do big brothers suck, Bran flakes?

Oh. That's why. Notice the snot pouring out of the nostrils? Notice his mean mother was photographing the grossness so Boone would believe her? I have priorities, people. That thing was nasty for a few hours, and he still has a lump there, poor little guy. This was by far the worst thing one of my kids has suffered at the hands of another of my kids (knock on wood).

So Keaton doesn't really suck, of course. But he DOES graduate from preschool a lot. Here he is with Miss Jeanne...

...and Miss Shannon (who I am certain would murder me if she knew I was posting this picture of her on the internet. She reminds me of Paula Deen, except not enormous)...

...and then here he is at his special school with Miss Cooley...

...and Miss Beth.

He had such a great time at this new school and those women helped him so much in the short time that he was in the class. He really made some progress there and we are hopeful that kindergarten will go smoothly in the fall.

This is just some random pajama picture that I thought was cute. I have to capture the pleasantries when they happen so I can prove to them that they love each other.

Here's another random picture -- that would be Coldplay, rocking out in the middle of the lawn section IN THE RAIN at the concert Boone and I went to. Oh Chris Martin, you so totally rock I can hardly stand it. I think I shall purchase tickets to partake of your musical goodness again in Charlotte. Amen.

Speaking of beautiful people...

Look at my little girl! Isn't she just gorgeous? This was the day of her fitting for her ballet recital, and I caught her first glimpse of herself in the mirror. She was pretty thrilled.

This one is pretty fuzzy but cute of Rylan listening to some instructions from her teacher at the dress rehearsal. And the next ones are of Rylan and her friend Adison after the recital today. She did a great job and we are so proud of our little ballerina!

So yeah. That's been May so far. Busy.

INJURY UPDATE:

I had to quit spinning and any weight training that required standing about 3 weeks ago because my leg was getting worse. Then, just for kicks, I had a mole removed (which turned out to be normal but left a lovely scar) and that barred me from heavy lifting and swimming for 2 weeks, so I'm roughly the size of a barge at this point. My leg is still broken (in that stress fracture-y kind of way), but I'm slowly improving. I think by the time school starts (which is August 10th for us) I'll be ready to start the slow buildup to distance running again. I don't think my full marathon in December plans are going to pan out, but I should be able to run another half by then, and then hopefully run 26.2 in March. I miss it even more than I thought I would, but I am determined to let myself heal adequately, and rest seems to be what is required, so rest I shall.

I'm glad we spent this time together. Thanks for tuning in!

Back to February

I haven't posted pictures of my kids in ages, so I am backtracking a bit to make sure I document Rylan's 7th birthday and our first visitors of 2009.

Boone's parents (Nana and Big Poppy) came to visit over Ry's day and we had loads of fun with them, as usual. That picture down there is my hot mother in law, with a very focused Mousketeer, apparently.

And that one up there ^^^ is just a fairly good peek into the dynamic at our house when Boone's parents visit -- we have a lot of desserts and a lot of goofing around with Big Poppy. (Sorry about the closed eyes, Ray. I have some better pics of you but I forgot to transfer them to this post. I'll get you next time:)

Rylan stuck with her standard birthday/Halloween theme of fairy/princess/unicorn/estrogen festival. She is happy with it so I am happy with it.

Ry wanted strawberry shortcake this year which made my job extra easy in the cake department. She had several friends over and a good time was had by all. I can't believe my little girl is 7! Because she acts like she is 13! Boone and I are so hosed when that day actually comes! Yippee!

We had her party on Saturday, but her actual birthday was 2 days later, so we celebrated again with Boone's parents by going to the zoo in Columbia.

Hot MIL again...

Ry's birthday pony ride -- what more can a girl ask for?

The boys rode this zoo train while Ry got on the pony -- we were too cheap to pay for the boys to ride the ponies AND the train, so this is what they got. I think they were okay with it...

We were also too cheap to pay for llama food when there was tons of it spilled all over the ground. I wish I had pictures of our kids scrounging in the dirt for animal feed. We're a ghetto zoo family, what can I say? They loved it though. And I loved that I keep Purell in every bag I own.

This is pretty much my favorite picture from the whole visit. I am sure Boone will kill me for posting it, but it's just too funny not to. That bird was really into the taste of his hair product and would not let up. The same stupid bird later bit me, so I like to imagine that it got alcohol poisoning from Boone's mega hold gel and died. (Because my middle name is "Revenge" -- you'd be wise to just trust me on that one).

Keaton loved these lorakeets like nobody's business, but he's lucky they didn't sample HIS hair that morning or he would have changed his tune.

So anyway, we had fun. I have more pictures, but I am saving them for my next post. Working title: "My kids are spazoids"

You'll agree when you see the evidence...

S.O.S.

So I sort of went to the pool today for the first time in over 7 years. Well, the first time without children in my arms in over 7 years, anyway. Since I am trying to rest this bum leg of mine I figured I should take all the advice I've been given to start swimming/pool running. I have been meaning to re-learn how to swim for years now, mostly because I want to do a triathlon someday and the swimming part terrifies me. The stress fracture just sort of shoved me into the deep end a little more forcefully.

Anyway, it turns out I suck at swimming. Specifically, the breathing part. I don't feel all that spazzy actually moving my body through the water, it's just that I can't seem to coordinate the whole "get rid of your carbon dioxide and exchange it for oxygen" thing. I'm stumped. I feel like I am gasping for breath mid-way through the lap -- like I can't breath deeply enough to do any good. And no matter how hard I tried today, I could NOT exhale under water. I think that was the problem -- not having enough time during a breath to exhale and inhale before putting my head back in. I did a lot (and by a lot I mean not very much) of backstroking just because I can breath while I do that, but I SOOO wanted to look as cool as Sarah did while she butterflied her way down and back, down and back. I guess it helps to have been on the swim team, eh?

Here's what surprises me though: 5 years ago, if I had experienced what I just went through at the Y, I would have said, "I suck at this -- I'm doing something else instead to avoid looking stupid". But today, I came out of there saying, "I suck at this, but I won't ever get better at it if I don't go through this part first. And who am I trying to impress? The 75 year olds floating on their pool noodles?"

I know I look like I am drowning right now, and technically I think I sort of might be. But I am going to stick to it, ask for advice on the breathing thing, and if I don't improve, I'll pay for a few private swim lessons until I master the breathing part.

And this concludes today's "Why I like myself more now than I did 5 years ago" motivational thought. (I credit running those races for my attitude shift, by the way. I can't wait to get back to it!)

P.S. This is the part where you swimmers out there fix me simply by leaving comments. Go on now, I'm waiting...

McYummy, or "Why I'm glad I broke my leg"

Okay. My apologies to the few of you who heard this story at dinner tonight (we missed you there, Emma!). Feel free to move on to something else if you don't want the same story again.

So I get to the orthopedic clinic yesterday and after just a few minutes I got called back by a nurse. She pulled me into the treatment area (the cast room, actually, which really confused me at first), which had 4 different "rooms" divided up by curtains on each side but open to the common area in the front. Each room had only an exam chair in it, and the doctors were just sort of rolling from one area to the other on stools. Really, it was kind of bizarre.

Anyway, the nurse asks what my deal is and I give her the whole rundown, asking at the end, "Am I getting a cast or something?" She sort of laughed and assured me that although they did cast bones in that room, that they also performed exams and other treatments, and that a doctor would be over shortly.

So I'm sitting there for a few minutes, watching a couple of docs going back and forth between the patients to my left and right, and, you know, thinking kind thoughts about people and how I can become a more charitable person (typical behavior for me), when he appeared to my left.

McYummy.

Oh. My. Gosh.

***Let me pause here to say I am totally happy in my marriage, that I have not had any lustful thoughts of any kind about McYummersface, and that this whole thing is totally innocent.***

Seriously, this guy was so good looking that I immediately looked away because I groaned audibly and started giggling. Giggling! What am I, 9 years old? I kept smirking and laughing at how juvenile I was behaving, which of course made me laugh even harder, until I was turning my head as far to the right as I could manage to avoid making eye contact.

I started thinking, "Oh PLEASE don't let him be my doctor. I will literally pass out if that guy grabs my leg, or I'll pee my pants trying to flex hard enough to impress him with my calf muscles. Why can't I stop grinning? If he comes over here, he's going to ask what I am laughing about. And what am I going to say, 'Ummm...you are just insanely good looking and I can't stop giggling about it'? Yep, I probably will say that. What are my other options? Trying to look cool and act casual? That is CLEARLY not going to work out. I guess I'll just fess up and tell him how hot he is."

And then I started thinking, "Wait. Maybe I really DON'T want him to be my doctor. People who are that good looking get a lot of favors and sometimes skate by with their faces instead of their brains. What if he's a total moron and tells me to ice my fracture and take Motrin? Hmmm...I'll bet he's a lousy doctor..."

So you can imagine my relief when MY doctor rolled up with a gaping space between his front teeth (which, incidentally, were yellow) and what appeared to be a toupee springing forth from his scrub top. Phew! An ugly-ish doctor -- he's probably super smart, 'cause dang -- nobody did him any favors based on appearances.

Apparently my old high school acting days are still with me, because I have found I like to write out my conversations is script form. Ahem:

Dr. Yikes: "So, what's going on?"

Me: "Uh, I have a tibial stress fracture, but my PCM -- Dr. Idiot -- told me to ice it for 6 days, so I figured she was a moron and begged to see you guys"

Dr: "Hmm. Okay, tell me about your running."

Me: "Blah, blah, blah, running, blah, blah, blah" (but thinking, "Wow, I am glad I have that chest hair to focus on instead of McYummy over there, because I don't want this dude thinking I am digging his blatant display of manliness because I am all flushed and smiley")

Dr: "Okay" (grabs my leg, runs hands down each side of my tibia) "Does this hurt at all?"

Me: "Nope" (Yep. I would have passed out if the other doc was doing that. At least I shaved my legs, but I really need a pedicure. I could cut him with my heel skin. What is up with my pinky toe? Why don't I have a nail there? And why does my middle toenail slant to the side like that? I'm glad this dude is my doctor, so the hot guy isn't grossed out by my weird feet. Guys with teeth like that have no place criticizing my feet.)

Dr: "Let me go check your scan -- I'll be right back"

Me: "Okay" (back to thinking charitable thoughts...)

5 minutes later...

Dr: "Alright Miss Terry, you do indeed have a fracture there."

Me: "I know. I saw the scan on Thursday. So now what? And don't tell me to ice it"

Dr: "Hahaha!

Me: (Dude, that wasn't even funny. Hot doctor wouldn't have laughed at that. Ugh, quit laughing -- I can see more of your teeth when you laugh. I wonder if Boone is your dentist? I need to have him make bleaching trays for you. Or not, because then I would trust you less as a doctor...)

Dr: "Okay, let's talk about nutrition -- how is your diet?"

Me: "Really, it's pretty good (minus the occasional sleeve of Thin Mints). I take a multivitamin and a calcium supplement daily, and I eat a lot of fish and nuts and veggies and whole grains."

Hot doctor would have called me out on this one. He would have said, "Um, you are a runner, and you say your diet is really pretty good, but I can see your looonnnggg fanny, so you must be lying. How many Thin Mints have you eaten this week?"

Busted.

But Hot Doctor was not the one asking questions, was he? If he had been, the next Q and A would have gone like this:

McYummy: "Do you have any abnormalities with your menstrual cycle?"

Me: "Me? Oh, I don't menstruate. Once a month lilies and rainbows emerge from my nether regions while harp music plays, but that's about it!"

Sigh. I really honestly had that conversation in my head while my real doctor was asking me about my medical history. Which of course causes me to wonder how mental I must be to pull answers like that out of thin air.

Anyway, Hot Doctor wandered away sometime during my exam which was good, because it meant I heard and comprehended my instructions. I go back in about 10 days for my first follow up, but until then I can't run, can't walk any more than necessary (to the Gap tonight was necessary enough), can't elliptical, and have to stay seated on the spin bike. It's brutal, but I plan on being a good girl, nice and compliant (as I am by nature) so I can return ASAP to hard core running and general awesomeness.

If I see Hot Doctor at my next appointment, I am seriously considering sneaking a cell phone picture so I can post him. Everyone deserves a good girly giggle now and then.

If I could stop giggling...

...I could tell all of you about my orthopedic appointment yesterday. I'm working on it.

Must. figure. out. how. to. wipe. smile. off. face.

Guess I'll go look at myself in a bathing suit...

P.S. I'll give you a hint -- it rhymes with "one of the other ortho docs in the clinic was so HAWT my retinas burned"

Pity Party **UPDATED**

I have a stress fracture on my left tibia. It hurts. It means I am done running for several weeks if not months, which means I will lose everything I have worked for the last year and be back at square one when I am finally okay to run again.

I have a clueless doctor who told me, "Yep, sounds like a stress fracture -- just take Motrin and ice it for 4-6 days and you'll feel better. Do you still want a bone scan?"

Yes, I still wanted one. So I had one today, and the tech showed me my plain-as-the-nose-on-your-face fracture right where I thought it was. I will have a follow up appointment with the doctor early next week, but I have zero confidence in her recovery instructions (see above).

So now not only am I done running, I don't know what kind of timeline I am looking at. Am I okay to go on walks around the neighborhood? Can I spin? Use the elliptical? When I DO start running again, how far is okay? How often? How fast? I am already concerned that when I start again I will be so paranoid about re-injury that I won't push myself.

I am going to try to be positive throughout this setback and focus on other forms of exercise, but I am giving myself the weekend to be bummed out of my skull. Hopefully this isn't going to kill my plan to run the full marathon in Charlotte in December, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I was scared I might lose that too.

WAAAAAAAAAAAA.

The end.

***UPDATE***

Dr. I-swear-she-didn't-finish-medical-school called me today and left this message on my answering machine:

"Hi Nicole. This is Dr. Idiot calling to tell you that your bone scan was indeed positive for a stress fracture in your left leg, which is shin splints. Have a good weekend!"

No phone number. No follow up instructions. No understanding of the difference between soft tissue damage and bone fractures.

So I called the hospital back, asked to speak to Dr. Idiot, got her nurse instead, who proceeded to put me on hold for over 40 minutes (hanging up on me once in the process) before finally waving Dr. Idiot down long enough to speak to me. This is an actual transcript of the conversation (that I am pulling from my steel trap of a memory):

Dr. Idiot: "Hello?"
Me: "Dr. Idiot?"
Dr.: "Yes."
Me: "This is Nicole Ter-"
Dr: "I know"
Me: "Oh. Well you called me earlier and said I do have a stress fracture on my left tibia."
Dr: "Yep -- it's a level 1 fracture, which is shin splints."
Me (trying not to let her hear my eyes rolling over the phone): "Soo...."
Dr: "So stay off it."
Me: "Stay off it? For how long?"
Dr: "You need to ice it and take Motrin (never mind that Motrin will delay the healing process in a stress fracture)"
Me (done trying to talk to someone who thinks ice will help my bone heal in 4-6 DAYS, not weeks): "Can I see an orthopedist?"
Dr: (Sigh) "Yep. You have a pen?"
Me: "Ummmm...yep. Got it."
Dr: "867-5309. Call on Monday"

CLICK.

Yes, as in Dr.Idiot hung up on me. Good thing this is all free, or I'd be a little crustier (yes, it IS possible) about this whole ordeal. The good news is I'll get to see an orthopedist sometime in the near future and get some answers on what the dealio is with my bum leg. I'll keep you all posted, because I know you are worried sick over it:)
